Goapele is one of those undeniably beautiful gems that usually go unnoticed because they are buried in the crevices of the earth...that is until they are found by the ones looking for hidden treasure. It's been almost six years since her previous release but her recent album Break Of Dawn shows a different side of the singer. On 2005's 'Change It All' we saw a more reserved laid back version of Goapele but on her new album she portrays a more sensual, confident side and I got to say, I like! The mood of the album still captures the essence of Goapele but I definitely get the feeling that she has found herself. "Musically, [it's] still soulful and eclectic, but I think I opened up a little bit more vocally. It’s a little more intimate. It’s a little more sensual than before—and pensive" as stated in a recent interview with Washington Post.
The album opens with Play which sets the listener up for whats to come. The beat is demanding in a delightful manner and the roaring tiger in the first two seconds let's us know that she isn't playing around either (see how I did that...wordplay haha). Tears On My Pillow is a sweet ballad that discusses the struggle of letting go of love. Undertow is probably one of my favorites from the album. After hearing it for the first time I found it very difficult to move on to other tracks without repeating it over and over again. The production on this is amazing and her voice sounds so good. Love it! Hush is another one of my favorites. Goapele opens up about the obstacles of being a single mother and the hardships of life. I feel like I'm being read a lullaby before bed which is the exact feeling that this record is supposed to portray. Truly heartfelt. Milk & Honey is another banger that delicately utilizes synthesized hooks to add a hint of sexy as opposed to enhancing vocal ability.
All in all Goapele did not come up short with this album. It's tasteful, arousing, and sophisticated. Even though its only been a few days since it's release, I'm already anticipating the next album! It's definitely worth a listen. It's sure to please!
