If I had to sit here and count the amount of people that have gained deals via internet buzz alone, you'd think I was crazy just for trying. When I think of the entertainment aspect of the internet I imagine it as one big open mic night. Everyone is given the chance to showcase their talents and promote themselves. They are vulnerable and completely stripped of their comfort zone placed in front of people that they don't know. Now at this stage one or two things could happen -- #1 the audience loves you or #2 they boo your ass off the stage. I've seen quite a few #2 scenarios but not in this case. I'd like to introduce you all to Maxine Ashley. Born and raised in the Bronx, 19 year old Maxine is the perfect example of what I like to call "young, wild, and eclectic". She's funky, bubbly, and is about as weird as they come...but don't worry, we like that.
Her r&b covers of today's favorite tracks has garnered over 3 million views combined and has gained the attention of mister Pharrell Williams. She's currently signed to Interscope/i am OTHER, a joint venture between Interscope Records and Pharrell's label. Maxine has been working on some new material for her debut album which will be released in a few months. The first single from the record is Cookieman feat Pharrell which was actually featured in Lanvin's spring/summer 2012 ad campaign. Score!! The grimy melodic pop sound of this track is definitely different than the singing covers on her YouTube channel but it just shows how diverse she is in her efforts. I'd keep my eye on this one for sure.
